Tungsten Cubes

A tungsten cube turns one of the most striking properties of tungsten into something you can experience first-hand: extraordinary weight in a remarkably small space. Choose from seven sizes, from a 38g half-inch cube to a 20kg four-inch cube.

About Tungsten Cubes

Tungsten cubes: density you can feel

Pick up a tungsten cube for the first time and the immediate reaction is usually its weight. Your eyes tell you how heavy an object of that size should be. Tungsten has other ideas.

That contradiction is what makes these cubes so satisfying to hold. The shape is deliberately simple, leaving the material itself as the interesting part.

Our tungsten cubes are machined from a high-density tungsten alloy containing 95% to 97% tungsten, depending on material availability. The range starts with a 0.5-inch cube weighing just 38g, but the effect becomes much more pronounced as the dimensions increase. The 1-inch tungsten cube weighs 315g. Move up just half an inch and the 1.5-inch tungsten cube puts approximately 1kg of material into a cube small enough to sit comfortably in your hand.

It is a very direct way to experience density rather than simply read about it.

From 38g to a 20kg tungsten block

There are seven sizes in the collection: 0.5 inch at 38g, 1 inch at 315g, 1.5 inches at 1kg, 2 inches at 2.5kg, 2.5 inches at 5kg, 3 inches at 8kg and 4 inches at 20kg.

At the smaller end, the cubes make compact desk objects and unusual gifts. As the dimensions increase, they become considerably more substantial. The 4-inch tungsten cube weighs 20kg. It is only eight times the volume of the 2-inch cube, but it is also eight times the mass: 20kg concentrated into an object measuring four inches along each edge.

If you are deciding which size makes sense, our guide shows how much each tungsten cube weighs across the full range. Every cube comes with a display stand and a custom insert.

Which tungsten cube should you buy?

There is no single best size. It depends on what you want from it. The half-inch cube is the most accessible place to start, with a tungsten cube price from £45. The 1-inch gives you considerably more weight while remaining compact. The 1.5-inch, or tungsten cube 1kg model, is where the relationship between size and mass becomes particularly striking.

The 2-inch weighs 2.5kg, the 2.5-inch reaches 5kg and the 3-inch weighs 8kg. A 4 inch tungsten cube takes the idea to its logical extreme at 20kg.

If you arrived looking for a tungsten cube for sale but are not sure tungsten is the material for you, compare our metal cubes in other elements. The same simple form makes their differences in weight immediately apparent. For anyone looking to buy tungsten cubes, that is ultimately their appeal: a material normally encountered as a specification becomes something physical. You are left with the material itself.

The progression is worth thinking about in three dimensions. Doubling the edge length of a cube gives eight times the volume, so apparently modest changes in size create large changes in mass. That is why the range moves from a pocket-sized object to something that demands two hands without ever changing the underlying geometry.

Questions

How much does a tungsten cube weigh?

It depends on the size. Project Atomic tungsten cubes range from 38g for the 0.5-inch cube to 20kg for the 4-inch cube. Between them are 315g, 1kg, 2.5kg, 5kg and 8kg versions. See how much each tungsten cube weighs for the complete size comparison.

What is a tungsten cube?

A tungsten cube is a precisely machined block made primarily from tungsten. Project Atomic cubes use a high-density alloy containing 95% to 97% tungsten, depending on material availability. Their simple shape lets you experience their defining characteristic directly: a surprising amount of mass concentrated into a very small object.

Why are tungsten cubes so expensive?

A tungsten cube contains a substantial amount of tungsten alloy, particularly as the size increases. Because a cube’s volume rises rapidly as its dimensions increase, moving up a seemingly small amount in size requires much more material. Project Atomic cubes start at £45 for the 0.5-inch size, with prices increasing across the range.

Is tungsten magnetic?

Pure tungsten is only weakly magnetic. Project Atomic cubes are tungsten alloys rather than pure elemental tungsten and can contain nickel with iron or copper depending on material availability. Their response to a magnet can therefore depend on the exact alloy. Do not use magnetism alone as a test of whether a cube contains tungsten.

Is tungsten toxic or safe to handle?

Solid tungsten is different from tungsten compounds, powders or dust created during industrial processing. These cubes are intended to be handled as finished solid objects. They should not be cut, ground or otherwise processed in ways that create dust. If you need material-specific safety information, contact Project Atomic before altering the product.

Which size tungsten cube should I buy?

For a small desk object or gift, start with the 0.5-inch or 1-inch cube. The 1.5-inch cube packs 1kg into a compact form and makes the density much more obvious. The 2-inch to 4-inch cubes become progressively more substantial, reaching 20kg at the largest size.
